Mark 6:3
(AMP) Is not this the Carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother is James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here among us? And they took offense at Him and were hurt [that is, they disapproved of Him, and it hindered them from acknowledging His authority] and they were caused to stumble and fall.

To be familiar with something or someone is when you frequently see, hear, or experience that thing for a long time. Being familiar or acquainted with someone has many importance but if care and a conscious spiritual discipline is not given to one’s soul, familiarity can cause you to disrespect one who deserves your respect.

Looking at our memory verse, the neighbours of Jesus never admitted He was the Messiah because they knew Him. They knew Him as a trained carpenter by Joseph, His father, they knew His brothers and sisters. I’m even sure some knew Him from childhood, played with Him and grew up with him. But, because, they allowed familiarity to take them off-guard, they rather despised Him including the miracles He did.

Instead of supporting His mission and assignment on earth, they did not believe He was the prophesied Messiah to come. It is familiarity that can make the Pastor’s kid go astray. It is familiarity that can make the church member get fed up with Pastor’s messages.

Spiritual discipline is needed to prevent familiarity from making us lose some blessings and truth due us.

INSIGHT: Familiarity can catch you off-guard such that you can lose the best God may have in store for you.
